Spain's sun-baked south — fortified wines, Pedro Ximénez and brandy under the DO system, tracked on WineFortune
Andalucia is the southernmost wine region of Spain, historically defined by fortified wines raised under the solera system. WineFortune tracks three wines here from one producer, including wines from the sub-region of Montilla-Moriles.
The region's signature grapes are Pedro Ximénez, Palomino and Moscatel. Styles range from bone-dry, biologically aged wines under a veil of flor to intensely sweet, raisined Pedro Ximénez, alongside a long tradition of pot-still brandy aged in seasoned casks. Among the wines tracked, two carry a DO designation and one is a brandy.
The climate is hot and dry, tempered near the coast by Atlantic breezes, and the most prized vineyards sit on bright, chalky albariza soils that hold winter moisture through the summer. The WineFortune index, built from WineFortune's own trades and listings over 90 days, does not currently publish a median price per 75 cl bottle for this region.
Medians are the 90-day WineFortune index per 75cl, ex VAT, built from WineFortune trades and listings. Wines without a trade or listing are tracked but not indexed.
Andalucia is the home of Spain's great fortified wines, from bone-dry styles aged under a veil of flor to dark, raisined sweet wines from Pedro Ximénez. The region also has a long tradition of cask-aged brandy. WineFortune currently tracks three wines from the region, including one brandy.
Montilla-Moriles is a sub-region of Andalucia, inland from the coast, famed above all for Pedro Ximénez. Its hot climate ripens grapes so fully that many wines reach high strength naturally, without fortification. WineFortune tracks wines from Montilla-Moriles within its Andalucia coverage.
Not at present. The WineFortune index shows a median price per 75 cl bottle, built from WineFortune's own trades and listings over a 90-day window. No index median is currently published for Andalucia.
Pedro Ximénez, Palomino and Moscatel are the region's defining grapes. Palomino underpins the dry, flor-aged styles, Pedro Ximénez the intensely sweet wines made from sun-dried grapes, and Moscatel a smaller share of aromatic sweet wines.
