On Monday evening at the Kajakas restaurant in Tallinn, the WineFortune team emerged victorious in the final of the Wine & Blind 2023 blind wine tasting competition organized throughout the year by the Estonian Sommelier Association (ESA).
Wine & Blind is a lively competition initiated by ESA to test the wine theory knowledge and blind tasting skills of sommeliers and wine enthusiasts. This is the second consecutive season of Wine & Blind, which brought together 9 teams representing Estonian sommeliers, wine enthusiasts, and wine merchants throughout the year.
In the intense final stage held on November 27, the WineFortune team emerged as the overall winner of the competition. Before the final stage, the WineFortune team led with 8 points, but in the last round, additional points came into play, and it was possible to earn up to 20 points.
"I am extremely pleased that the WineFortune team was able to positively surprise many participants and organizers because we really took this competition seriously and did our best. Many thanks to ESA for the excellent organization! Wines are our passion. It was a great honor to participate in this competition, and I thank the victorious WineFortune team, which includes besides me, Silver Pukk, Veronica Zäro, Ludmila Korobova, and Rain Rosimannus. We definitely plan to participate again next year and defend our title," said Risto Kaljurand, CEO of WineFortune.
At each Wine & Blind stage, teams gathered at the premises of an ESA supporter to blind taste various wines from around the world and earn points through their recognition, determining the winner of each specific stage. Each time, the focus was on specific countries and regions or grape varieties. According to the theme, each team was served pairs of wines, either two whites, two sparkling wines, two reds, or two dessert wines. Teams had to guess the alcohol percentage of the wines, which grapes the wines contained, the region and country of origin, and also answer questions related to wine theory.
