France's great river valley of Chenin Blanc and cool-climate whites, tracked on WineFortune
The Loire is one of France's principal wine regions, stretching along the Loire river from the Atlantic coast inland. On WineFortune it is an emerging hub: we currently track one wine here, a still white under the AOP designation, from one producer in the Vouvray sub-region.
The valley is above all Chenin Blanc country, and Vouvray is one of its most celebrated expressions of the grape, made in styles from bone dry through off-dry to lusciously sweet, as well as sparkling. Elsewhere the Loire is known for Sauvignon Blanc in its eastern reaches, Cabernet Franc for its reds, and Melon de Bourgogne near the ocean. The cool climate, shifting from maritime to continental as the river runs east, and soils of tuffeau limestone, flint and clay give the wines their freshness and cut.
The wine we track carries France's AOP designation, the country's protected-origin framework. The WineFortune price index does not yet publish a median for the Loire: index medians are quoted per 75 cl bottle and built from WineFortune's own trades and listings over 90 days, and no Loire wine is indexed at present. As coverage grows, this page will carry those figures.
Medians are the 90-day WineFortune index per 75cl, ex VAT, built from WineFortune trades and listings. Wines without a trade or listing are tracked but not indexed.
WineFortune currently tracks one wine from the Loire: a still white with AOP designation, made by one producer in the Vouvray sub-region. Coverage of the region is at an early stage and will broaden as more wines from the valley are added.
Chenin Blanc is the valley's signature white grape, at its most expressive in Vouvray. Sauvignon Blanc dominates the eastern Loire, Cabernet Franc leads the reds, and Melon de Bourgogne is grown near the Atlantic. The cool climate and limestone, flint and clay soils give the wines marked freshness.
