The premier cru of Cognac – chalk-grown Ugni Blanc distilled into eaux-de-vie of renowned finesse, tracked by WineFortune
Grande Champagne is the innermost growth of the Cognac region in France, widely regarded as the source of the appellation's most refined eaux-de-vie. WineFortune currently tracks three brandies here, all from a single producer, Tesseron, and all carrying the AOP designation.
The brandies of Grande Champagne are distilled almost entirely from Ugni Blanc, a high-acid white grape whose light base wine suits double distillation in copper pot stills. The spirit matures slowly in oak, developing the floral, honeyed and rancio character for which the cru is known.
The area's standing rests on its soils: soft, chalky limestone that retains moisture through the maritime, Atlantic-influenced growing season and yields spirits noted for their capacity for long ageing. Within the Cognac hierarchy, Grande Champagne is traditionally styled the premier cru.
